Hoppin’ down the bunny trail….

Aaaaaaaand now for another update on this year’s Project 365….

Day 95 (2012-04-04) ~ I went around the neighborhood taking pictures of tulips. I especially loved this pink and white one which looked so delicate. But then during processing, I threw an infrared filter onto it just to see what would happen and my jaw hit the floor. That little delicate flower suddenly looked so powerful and weapon-like! One bad_ss flower!

Day 96 (2012-04-05)
~ I've done quite a lot of spring floral photos lately, but it would be a shame not to while the blossoms are still around, right? Just to shake things up, I put a painting filter on this one which I think makes it look really cool.

Day 97 (2012-04-06)
~ More blossoms. Oy. I know, I know.

Day 98 (2012-04-07)
~ Okay, so, this is me, Wednesday and Scope on Easter morning. Duh. This is kind of a cheater picture because I took it on the 8th, not the 7th. However, I cheated for a good reason! You see, the picture I was going to post from the 7th, which was a GORGEOUS painting my kiddo is working on, she asked me not to post because she's not done with it yet. I don't ever want to step on her artsy toes, so I promised I wouldn't post it online. (No word yet on what she will say if she finds out I posted a picture of her in bunny ears though.... *wink*)

Day 99 (2012-04-08)
~ After our Easter extravaganza (which was sooOOooOOoo much fun!), Scope, Wednesday and I went for a long walk along the North Shore Channel Trail in Chicago. All along the trail there are quirky statues, figures and works of art. Between all of that AND the Easter party, I ended up taking over 200 photos that day and I have had a REALLY hard time narrowing it down to just one picture to post! *whimper* So, let’s just go with this one.

Day 100 (2012-04-09)
~ I have been slacking on my workouts lately (A LOT) and I am.... umm.... dissatisfied with how my summery clothes are fitting. Or NOT fitting, as the case may be. *sniffle* So, enough is enough. I am getting back in the game for real now, starting with my beloved iPod, which has been uploaded with a slew of new songs to keep me entertained while strut around, shrinking my derriere!

I can’t believe we are already at Day 100, can you?! Dang. We are about 27% of the way through the project so far. More on the way soon, swearsies!

Comic TRIP!

Aaaaaaaand now for another update on this year’s Project 365….

Day 89 (2012-03-29) ~ Every spring in Seattle, the trees come alive…. What?—No, no, not the blossoms, silly! I'm talking about the bees! In Seattle, where I lived most of my life, the trees BUZZ like electric fences in the spring because there are so many bees. I live in Chicago now. This is my second spring here, and while I was all up close and personal with the flowering trees at the park, it suddenly dawned on me.... where are all the bees?!?! The park was utterly silent. No buzzing bees at all. Weird. I never noticed that before. I mean, I know there have to be bees around here somewhere, because we grew a slew of strawberries last summer.... but I never saw a single bee visiting the plants. The bees here must be sneaky!

Day 90 (2012-03-30)
~ The 5th in my 80's Strawberry Shortcake Doll series. Raspberry Tart.

Day 91 (2012-03-31)
~ Scope, Wednesday, and I took a trip out of town last weekend. Since Wednesday will be learning to drive soon, she sat up front with Scope so he could give her some driving tips on the way. I sat in the backseat the whole four hour drive with Fernando Von Bakonstein to keep me company. It's silly, I know, but of all the pictures I took that day, this one is my favorite! :-P

Day 92 (2012-04-01)
~ While out of town last weekend, Wednesday and I went into a cute little shop with Scope’s mom where I saw this lamp (of sorts) which I thought was gorgeous. A glass jar with illuminated cherry blossoms and pussy willows! So beautiful! Unfortunately, the price tag was NOT beautiful at all. It was ugly, ugly, UGLY! So, I settled for a picture of the lamp instead. :-)

Day 93 (2012-04-02)
~ Comic TRIP! Just an experiment going on here featuring some comic book pages and my camera set on BULB. I swiveled the camera across the scattered pages during the exposure just to see what sort of effects I could get. This was my favorite one.

For the curious: those pages aren't from a real comic book, but actually props that were used in a 2008 American Idol “Tainted Love” Ford commercial featuring David Cook, Jason Castro, etc. The pages are AWESOME. I have several of them, and have the two best of the bunch framed in my hallway. Pretty cool, huh?! Here’s the Ford commercial which features these comics….

Day 94 (2012-04-03)
~ Scope saw this car from the train on his way home from work and came running home to tell me about it. We got in our car and went back to find it, take pictures, and giggle. The car seems to be advertising a tattoo shop. Not to be mean, but there's NO WAY that I would get a tattoo from someone who wields a paintbrush like THIS!! Wow.

And, there! I’m about 25% of the way through the project so far. More on the way soon!

The Adventures of Fernando Von Bakonstein: The Weekend Road Trip

Early last Saturday morning, Scope, Wednesday and I packed a few bags, jumped into our PT Cruiser, and hit the road. Scope’s family was having a mini reunion 200 miles south of Chicago, in a small town called Mattoon. Pffft! Mattoon. It’s kind of fun to say. Try it. Muh-TOON. *giggle* It reminds me of a town Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck might have travelled through. And maybe they did, I dunno. But anyway….

We are still hosting Blogaritaville’s travelling porcine pal, Fernando Von Bakonstein (who came to stay with us after spending some good quality time with Skyler’s Dad in Colorado), and we thought we would take Fernando along to the family reunion with us!

Fernando is not exactly a morning person—uhh—pig. Needless to say, he didn’t appreciate being hauled out of bed at the butt crack of dawn.

There was much pouting and squealing and a grumbled ‘I hate you’ or two, but then we caffeinated the little diva and he got with the program.

Wednesday will be learning to drive soon and she wanted to sit up front with Scope in the car, study his moves, and pick up some driving tips on the road trip, so Fernando rode in the backseat with me.

On the way, the four of us listened to some 80’s compilation CDs and had a serious slew of snickering over that Frank and Moon Zappa “Valley Girl” song because one of Wednesday’s best friends is a tall, nerdy boy from India who, unintentionally, talks EXACTLY like that girl every time he opens his mouth. “Oh my gawd!” “Like, I’m so sure!” “I’m, like, totally freaking out!”

He will forever be called ‘Val’ behind his back now.

Traffic was unusually light, so we made really good time. Soon, the city faded away in our rearview mirror and the landscape stretched out flat, flat, flat in all directions around us.

After a few hours in the car, Fernando REALLY needed a potty break!

We pulled over for a minute or two at a rest stop so Fernando could…. well…. you know.

Then we hopped back in the car and, before we knew it, we were in Mattoon.

We checked into our hotel and then got together with Scope’s family. We hung out, talking and eating with the Scopes all day, then had a big group picture taken by a dude working the front desk. (And, yes, Fernando is in the picture too! Wednesday is holding him. See that tiny pink speck in her hand?)

We went to bed in the hotel that night and it was soooooooo comfy, nice, relaxing and peaceful…. until the fire alarm went off!!!!

Yep.

Right after midnight, on April 1, we were jolted awake by a horrifically loud “BRRRRRRRRREEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH” noise that seemed to have no end. It was like Nick Nolte was riding a lawn mower and singing “Something’s Coming” right in our room: Terrifying. Of course, while maybe our hotel neighbors assumed the proper protocol when being rudely awaken by Nick Nolte in the dead of night was to run up and down the hallway, panicking, in their underpants, we thought otherwise. In fact, we found the timing of the fire alarm to be suspicious. Most suspicious indeed.

A fire alarm at midnight on April Fool’s Day? Smelled like a punking to us! And we were right. Well, sort of. It turned out that some kids had stuffed a sandwich in the filter of the hotel’s hot tub or something dumb like that. The hot tub overheated and—viola!—Nick Nolte burst onto the scene.

Fernando was most displeased.

But we eventually got back to sleep and, in the morning, we celebrated April Fool’s Day the proper, non-Nick Nolte way, as is, and always has been, tradition in my family going all the way back to the 1990’s: We put fake spiders in Wednesday’s shoes.

AND in her breakfast when she wasn’t looking!

(Hee hee hee.)

Besides the spiders, Fernando was very happy with breakfast that morning. His favorite part was the blueberry muffins, so Wednesday put one in a cup to save for the ride back home.

After breakfast, we went back to our room to pack our bags. Wednesday decided to get her April Fool’s Day revenge by having a pillow fight with Scope. I believe Wednesday won.

And she laughed so hard, she couldn’t breathe!

*snicker*

Soon we were saying goodbye to the Scopes and were heading back home again.

After a couple of hours on the road, we stopped to have lunch at Steak ‘n Shake.

Fernando REALLY liked the fudge brownie shake!

However, not everything was as appetizing at the Steak ‘n Shake that day. I won’t give you all the disgusting details, but I will tell you that Fernando and I witnessed a woman leave the bathroom stall in an extremely unsanitary state, walk right out of the bathroom without washing her hands, then proceed to put her poo-poo tainted paws all over her kids and their food!

Fernando was utterly grossed out.

My good friend, Germaphobia, pulled into the parking lot right at that moment and started tapping on the window, beckoning me outside. Scope, Wednesday, and Fernando were all eager to flee the Steak ‘n Shake in a hurry too, lest Ms. Poo-poo Paws come over to our table to borrow our ketchup or otherwise contaminate us in some way. (*shudder*) So, we paid our bill and ran for the exit, touching as little as possible on our way out. Gah!

(Oh, fresh air, how I love thee!)

Back in the car, we soon found ourselves racing the L Train.

We won, of course. Then we passed the hazy city.

And then we were home. :-)

Green day!

So, waaaayyyyyyy back on St. Patrick’s Day morning, Scope, Wednesday and I dragged ourselves out of bed, offensively early for a Saturday, and got all decked out in our finest green garb. It was for a really good reason, of course…. Or two really good reasons…. Well, no, actually, it was for one really good reason and one cruddy one. You see, poor Scope had to go to work.

*sniffle*

Scope was the first one out the door, seeing as though he needed to get to his office downtown by 7:30 am. (Ouch.) Wednesday and I had the luxury of a little more time to dawdle, but not by much. Soon, she and I were hopping the L Train, with a slew of other Leprechaun-ified people, to the Loop to participate in all the green goodness going on down there.

St. Patrick’s Day is a big deal in Chicago. Duh. Every St. Patrick’s Day, over 100,000 people (according to the official website) venture into the city to celebrate. This year, thanks to the unseasonably faboo weather and 80 degree temps, I would bet there was at least double that tally at the party…. which makes it all the more mystifying and whattheheckish as to why the CTA decided to do routine maintenance work AND SHUT DOWN A PORTION OF THE TRAIN TRACKS on that particular day.

(A turd on your pillow for that one, CTA. I mean, really. Could you have picked a more inconvenient day?! Jeez.)

After being booted off the L where the tracks were closed, ushered onto a bus, shuttled over to the next train stop, and re-boarded on another train with a thousand bewildered overgrown Leprechauns, Wednesday and I eventually made our way into the city.

Our first order of business was to tag along with 200,000 of our new best Irish friends over to the river to watch it being dyed green.

By some freak miracle, despite the massive crowd, Wednesday and I actually found a free spot at the railing to get an unimpeded view of the river, up close and personal. This made us happy and giggly….

….and yet somewhat worried that maybe this spot had been empty for a reason and we might not have a good view of the dying of the river there. But, no! It turned out it was the perfect spot to watch the coloring of the river after all. Suddenly, the boats came zooming past us!

The people in the first boat would toss the dye into the river. The dye was orange as it flew through the air, as you can see, but it turned neon green as soon as it hit the water. Then the second boat would rocket through the dye, stirring it up and spreading it around.

Back and forth and back and forth the boats raced in front of us, pouring dye and mixing it in.

It only took a few minutes for the river to morph into what looked like one huge vat of lime Kool-Aid.

When Wednesday and I had had our fill of ogling the green river, we wound our way through the festive crowd….

….and took refuge in The Disney Store for awhile. The Disney Store decided to hold a trivia contest for anyone who wanted to participate. The questions were pretty easy…. or at least I thought so. I’ve seen a few Disney movies over the years—who hasn’t, right?—so, I was actually shocked to find out that I was the only person there who knew what Mulan’s horse’s name is. (It’s Khan.) And that I was the only one there who knew Wendy’s youngest brother’s name in Peter Pan. (It’s Michael. C’mon, people, it’s a classic. Everyone should know that!)

In fact, there was only one question I did not know the answer to, which was whether Simba, The Beast or Buzz Lightyear makes a secret Hidden Mickey-ish appearance in Aladdin. Hmm….

Anyone know the answer to that?….

I guessed it was Simba, but it turned out that the answer was actually The Beast. Weird, huh? I know! When the Sultan is making a pyramid out of his toys, one of them is shaped like The Beast. I swear I never noticed that, did you?!

How funny. Anyway, I was awarded a free pin for knowing more Disney crap than any of the other customers…. and Wednesday laughed her butt off at me, cackling, “Mom, you’re so cute, but you’re REALLY a dork!”

Then Scope suddenly walked through the door of the Disney Store and was done working for the day. YAAAAYYYYYYYY!!!!

The three of us decided to walk over to Millennium Park. However, our 200,000 new Irish friends all had the same idea too. Because of the mammoth crowd, this was as close as we could get to The Bean or anything else in the park.

So, we went to Daley Plaza instead, where we found that they had dyed the fountain too!

It kind of reminded me of Slimer from Ghostbusters. Ewwwwwwwwww.

I’m sure Scope probably deserved this.

*snicker*

Then we grabbed a quick lunch and the three of us headed home on the L Train. (Or two trains and a shuttle bus, as the case was, thanks to the CTA!)

My sincere apologies to my wonderful husband, but….

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO going to go see Titanic in the theater again.

Oh, yeah!

It’s the only way I am ever, EVER going to hear Leonardo DiCaprio telling me that I’m his “best girl!”
